No — they’re bits of shell and sea grit, and they’re proof the sponge is genuinely from the sea rather than made in a factory. But you do need to get them out. Rinse the sponge thoroughly under running water before you use it, work it gently in your hands, and check it’s clear of any debris. Do this before the first use, every time, whether it’s for you or for anyone else.
Are sea sponges hypoallergenic?
Yes — our natural sea sponges are. If you know your skin is easily upset, they’re a gentle place to start.
