What to expect from a natural sponge: Every sea sponge is an individual — harvested from the sea, not manufactured — so no two are identical in shape.
Size: Sea sponges arrive dry and compact and expand as they absorb water. Each sponge measures approximately 4 inches when wet, so they will look smaller in the box. That is normal.
Small shells and grit: You may find tiny pieces of shell or sea grit in the pores. This is not dirt — it is a sign the sponges are genuinely from the sea. Simply rinse them out under running water before first use.
